I just ate paper.
Who here has made a sandwich? I've done it many times. Well today it was a bit more interesting than normal. Let me give you a slight prelude to today so you have a bit of an idea how thing are going.
The job is going great. I had my first day on Monday. The first few days(through Thursday) was just getting used to operating in the different parts of the store(I work at Walgreens). Friday, last night, I started doing the managerial stuff. I am pretty much designated to be the "money guy." What that means is that whenI come in, I have to count what we have in the safe, take the safe keys and be accountable for all the money moving through the store for my shift. This number is quite large. Not going to say how large, but just take my word for it that it's large enough to buy yourself a shiny new car:) Anyways...
So last night since it was my first time learning it, things were a little interesting. First of all we had to unload a truck that came in around 7:00. This truck had 1300 units in it. That means about 1300 boxes had to be unloaded. They typically have around 700-800 units in a truck, so this was a significantly larger truck than normal. At the end of the shift for the money guy, you have to start pulling register drawers and accounting for all the business that went through each and every register for that day. It's a pretty tedious procedure as you have to account for all the cash, credit/debit transactions, manufacturer coupons, checks, etc. We have 13 registers in the store. So it takes about 4 hours to do just this one thing. The goal here is do run 4 registers per hour. My shift was supposed to end at 11:00 PM, I had clocked in at 2:00PM.
Another thing important to note is that I wasnot 100% sure on when my shift was that day, becaus they had mentioned that they wanted me to change from my previously normal 7:00 AM -3:30 PM shift to the 2:00PM - 11:00 PM shift. So to err on the side of caution I woke up at 6:00 AM and showed up at 7:00. I stayed for an hour until the store manager got there and told me that I wasn't supposed to be there until 2:00. So I went home and couldn't sleep. So on this day I have been up since 6:00 AM. This is important to know...we'll come back to this.
So I'm unloading the truck around 7:20. Twenty minutes after when you would usually want to start on the drawers. Me and the guy who was training me stayed and helped with the truck until 9:20. The truck wasn't finished yet, but we had a job to do(drawers) and couldnot put it off any longer. So he had to train me and basically walk me through most of it since I hadn't done it before. Long story short, I didn't clock out until 2:45 PM. Only three hours and fifteen minutes before I would be officially awake for 24 hours. That's relating back to the waking up at 6:00 AM. So at that point I was totally exhausted. I'd been on my feet all day. My feet hurt, my knees hurt, I hurt like and old person.
So I slept long and hard. I woke up around 12, got showered and dressed and went to my apartment to watch the first half of K-State's game which they lost....then off to work. I've been working all week and wont' have a day off till Thursday(that's not at all a bad thing) but in any case, I prety much plan on working 50 hours a week now...that's 50 hours on your feet all day(more hurting like an old person, joints, feet and such.)
So I get home tonight around 12:30. I was happy with that. So I sit down and try to relax for a bit. I decide to make myself a sandwich. This is usually a happy time for me because I can think I'm being healthy cause I'm eating bread, a bit of mayonaise(sp), turkey, ham, cheese, carrots and water. Well since I'm not exactly 100% coherent, I fogot to take off the little paper seperation thing that all cheese slices have between each other. Long story short, the cheese went on my sandwich and I ate half of it(the paper) before I realized it.
I thought this was significant enough to blog about. I'm not sure whether to be scared(read: digestive system) or apathetic. In any case, I'm going to finish this sandwich minus the paper and get some sleep.
Until next time.
Ron

Well, hopefully since it doesn't have any ragged sides to grab onto anything it will just "slide right through" the digestive system, so to speak. :-)
Sounds like an interesting first few days at work, you can go back and read about it on your website after you've become a pro and remember the "fun" of those first few days. :-)
